I think that it is the most barbaric thing that any animal can be subjected to. Just because we have a voice, it does not mean that we should make the decision for them. One may say that if the safety and hygiene of the animals is kept in check, then why not let it continue. It is a good source of economy and gives an increase to social activity. However, one must also think of the fact that the animals are out of their natural habitat, with each day a nightmare. How do you think the Prime Minister would feel if if we bundled him into the back of a lorry, put him in a cage, denied him of food and drink and then beat him into acting how we wanted him to act? Some may think that this is a little eccentric, but in reality, what's the difference?
I am currently working in Spain and "le cirque de france - amar" is right outside of my office. I am wondering who would go and see animals in pain and sadness, unless to set them free? Does anyone have any knowledge of this circus and its animal rights? Because right now I can see several camels, lamas and zebras in spaces probable smaller than the caravans luxoriously laid beside them...

Rather than ban animals from the circus could the RSPCA not create another badge of approved exploitation like their Freedom foods one. This way everyone would win apart from the animals of course but they would have an official stamp of approval like the millions of cows, sheep, chickens and other live stock.

It would appear that the Blackpool Branch are having wild birds and knights in armour on horse back at there dog show this year 2011, and I feel that this is wrong and is just like a circus, If you don't support animals in circuses then this is just the same. now is the time to air your voice before the press get hold of this 16stone men on a horse is wrong

Yes because wild animals are called wild for a reason they need to be out and about not locked in cages.

Yes absolutely! Wild animals should be kept wild and should not be locked up in cages. I went to a circus a few months ago and it had no animals except some birds flying around. It was a great show and it didn't need the animals. I do not regulary go to the circus but I have heard about the ways the animals in them are treated and it just disgusts me. Hitting tigers with canes is NOT A SHOW. IT'S CRUELTY AND SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED! Save the circus animals.

I severly disagree with wild animals being kept in circuses in cramped conditions and being transported from place to place.
I believe that wild animals should be just that... in the wild. If they are not in the wild they should be in conservations or in zoos trying to breed them to keep the population up. (Tigers for example)
My local pub down the road, is advertising a circus which includes wild animals. It states: 'The best circus with wild animals', most likely meaning they do more tricks which are 'better'. I think the things they make the animals do are unnatural and wrong.
I certainly won't ever be going to a circus with animals because it's cruel and not natural for the animals. Im dissapointed because I missed the deadline of the questionnaire but I'm glad of the outcome which I read in animal life magazine.

Comeon! We can make this ban happen!
Dear reader
I believe that it is totally wrong to keep
any animal in a circus where they are humiliated and met by frightening images! It is cruel and in-hummaine ,
I believe that a W-I-L-D animal (clue in the name) Should belong in the wild.
If it is taken out it cannot be put back in because it will not be able to survive in such diverse conditions!
This is why we must keep the wild animals with their parents in the W-I-L-D!!!
Thankyou

Animals weren't made for putting on stages and laughing at. They weren't put here to perform gross displays of themselves; they are souls in their own right and just because there are only 38 doesn't mean we shouldn't save them. If that was 38 people, it would have stopped long ago. Why, just because they are not humans, should they suffer???
The world is mad to let things like this happen!!!

I just completed defra's questionnaire and I urge everyone to do the same, before 15th march, before it's too late. I have never been to a circus in my life, my dad would never have taken me to a circus with animals because of how cruel it is and I've had that belief since I was a child. 38 is a lot of animals and they all deserve a chance at a real life. I hope we can all make a difference.

Of course it is an important issue, the 38 left are still suffering, we should continue on fighting until every last animal has been removed from the circus

I've just finished filling in the DEFRA questionnaire on this subject. I expect the local circus will be back in town this summer. I'm going to be looking out for it to see if the camels are still there. If they've been taken out of the circus, that'll be great news, but even so I'm concerned what'll happen to them.
There was a question about this on DEFRA's site. I specified that the animals should be released back into the wild if they originally came from there, and if they were born into the circus lifestyle (and therefore wouldn't survive without human supervision) they should at least be taken to a sanctuary or somewhere they can be looked after and given a chance. I'm very much against euthanasia for healthy animals, and fear that this is what'd become of the circus animals if the employees can't be bothered to find them a better life when they have to let them go. I really think that euthanasia should be a last resort, and should only take place when an animal is terminally ill. If there's any chance of survival, we just can't give up.

Yes definetly the only reason that these animals are becoming extinct is because of the torture they are put through they get killed off by the pain and stress. circus owners know nothing they dont take the animals true feelings into account they are just bothered about putting on a good show no matter how much pain the animals go through. yes that may matter to some but in my opinion in this situation the animal should come first no matter what

I do not think its a major issue the less elephants there is in circuses the better. yes other people say that the elephants enjoy it but how can they be sure that they do actually enjoy themselves. even if they did carry on to be in circus business they need the right trainer who knows about their specific needs otherwise just ban it!

Every life counts, regardless of the quantity. Last year, I went past a circus and there were campaigners outside protesting by the entrance. They set up there every year, and they have about 4 or 5 camels there, and that's all. Those camels look so depressed though, and their fur is really messy and all they do in the field is lie around looking bored. Not exactly out in the wild, is it? They still count though, even if there are only a few of them.
I don't even know why that circus bothers. I'm not sure how many people actually attend it - there are never many cars by the tents. Most people I know don't agree with circuses anyway, and the very few people I do know who have attended say that it's really boring and they just have no personality, and never go there again. If the campaigners don't shut the circus down, the owners will run themselves out of business anyway! I don't know what'll happen to the camels when this happens though, or where they come from in the first place.

You're the RSPCA, this site is called give animals a voice. If you don't give these 38 animals left in the circus a voice just because there's 'only 38 of them' then what is this site even for? Why should they be the unlucky ones?

dpinn? Gosh you would be okay with the elephants performing for us if they have enough room? They should be in the wild and so i think its sick that anyone doesnt have a problem with it. If we want this issue sorted once and for all then we got to do it now! I cant beleive its taken this long to sort out 38 animals. The government need to do more about it.

Yes without doubt. One animal is as important as the next.
If 9,000 humans were kept captive and treated with such cruelty, and 8,962 were saved, I would hope that there would be effort made to also save the remaining 38, and I class every animal just as important as a human.

It's definately an important issue. After watching the elephant cruelty footage on the Born Free website, it made me feel sick. I think it's pathetic that with only a few animals still in the circus, humans, supposidly the ferior race, can not stop this disgusting behaviour.

Yes definately! I have never actually been to a circus which invloves animals as i refuse to go. I know how wrong it is and completely dont agree! We dont have freak circuses for people anymore becuase it was inhumane so why do humans think it ok for animals? These wild animals should be living in hot countires, roaming for miles not chained up in a tent with stupid people with red noses running around and frustrating them!

these animals are being tortured for the viewers engoyment. it is discusting. it is almost as bad as when they used to chain bears to stalks and tormenting them with dogs. whoever things that animals being paraded is mentally sick or just very very mean. :-( also circusis are places of torment and nightmares because i am clownophobic (mentally terrified of clowns) i think all circusis should be abolished.

I have visited the website www.bornfree.org as suggested by "Maren" I agree these animals are kept in appauling conditions which i make veary clear i am against. However, i want to say if elephants have a large land to roam free in and are treated well, then i have no complaints.

It's extremely important. Even if it was only one animal.
I am not from England, I am Italian and a few weeks ago I heard about a hundred of wild animals treated in a brutal way here in Italy: no water, no food, all crowded in boxes in which they couldnt see the light, dirty and sick.
Someone has to pay for it.

Why can't we just have big free range chook farms which would make the chooks and us happy. It would make the chooks happy because they could walk around anywhere and eat a variaty of foods. It would also make us happy because we would be getting eggs that are healthierfor us. And plus, having chooks all cooped up in tiny cages not knowing what it's like to be free, and go where ever they want, and eat all sorts of insects, seeds and other foods. Why isn't someone willing to stand up and fight for caged chooks. I would if I could, but I can't because I'm only 10 years old. We've got free range chooks, and we keep them locked up in their pen in the morning, then let them out in the afternoon. Big egg compannies could easily do that on the land they've already got.

how sad as well that the RSPCA is too appealing to the courts to try and get back a farm in North Yorkshire that was never theirs by right in the first place
greed is as sad as animal suffering !!

I have just read the last comment from dpinn1. However kind a trainer or handler can be to a wild animal in the circus they still spend their lives locked up in very cramped conditions, in a totally unnatural environment with absolutely no chance to do what they would naturally do or lead anything like a normal life. The only time they are not shackled will be when they are training or performing. Absolutely no free will whatsoever. I can't remember if there is footage of circus elephants on the RSPCA website, but I suggest you go to www.bornfree.org.uk and have a look at the footage accompanying Virginia McKenna's report. I couldn't watch it, reading was enough. There is absolutely no reason why we should have wild animals in circuses (or zoos - but circuses are even worse) There are fanstastically talented and brave acrobats and clowns who can entertain us in circuses, leave the animals where they belong

dpinn1 October 4, 2009 at 5:43 p.m.
I think as long as the animals are being treated well and looked after responsibly its fine for circuses to use animals for entertainment. However I think punishments and strict measures should be taken out against those who treat animals badly. 38 animals in circuses shouldnt be too hard to control with regular check ups.

absoluutely. i wouldn't want to be one of those 38 aniamls still in the circus! i think it is really important that the government stop circus acts altogether! my mum was watching a programme about it and there was a story about an elephant who just couldn't stand the cruelty anymore she flew into a unstopable rage and the only way they could stop her was to be shot and she dies! i think that is really mean and should be stopped however few there are left in england!
