Our campaigns
Born to suffer
Many pedigree dogs are vulnerable to unnecessary disease, disability or pain because they're bred primarily for how they look. join the campaign to end their suffering!
Laying hens
The ban on conventional battery cages starts on 1st Jan 2012. But are all countries going to comply?
Dangerous dogs
Irresponsible dog ownership costs the country millions of pounds each year in prevention and health costs. We need new laws!

well ii think it depeends if it is in a house kept as a pet then yes they should be let free as it is not a natural habitat for the birds. but if its farm birds such as chickens they should be aloud to roam free even if its just for a little rather than being stuck in a a hut others. honestly ii think they should be free and we should be looking afer there environment so they can reproduce and rare birds can get there numbers up

I don't think birds should be kept in cages because they could become distressed if owners neglect their pets. however if there is a danger to the pets, like dominic said about foxes, then they should be kept in cages as long as they wouldn't get bored and have a lot of things to play with.

I love chickens, I have a smallholding with around 80 chickens and a further 10 ducks, 6 turkeys, 3 guineafowl and an aivory full of budgies. I know a fair bit about the birds. I have conducted severel studies. I have over 20 breeds. I know my chickens. Now during the day when i'm at work the are locked in sheds and runs for safety reasons (fox), and they have hanging peck toys and straw and perches and large runs and in two sheds a mini greenhouse for dust bathing. Even with all of this when I get home at lunch they are still desperate to get out! Chickens love freedom, they love to run, to get bugs, to get in to places they shouldn't be, and this is what makes them happy, not being stuck in sheds with some silly straw, not being in a run with a perch, they love being outside. You wouldn't treat a dog or a horse like chickens are kept, you would be sent to prison if you did. The fact that they are cheap is not a viable reason to be cruel, and thats a word alot of the farmers avoid but depriving them of freedom is cruel. I say this needs to end, and this needs to end NOW!

Birds should not be allowed to be kept in cages because such birds as the game should have access to their own freedom. we have our rights and so should animals. just by adding "enrichment", does not increase the amount of quality in the cage. its just like bribary.

There is absolutely nothing justifiable in keeping a bird in a cage! So I don't think adding enrichment in any way improves the situation!

dear animal lover, how I agree with your coments, some of these gages that are sold are disgraceful, there should all be banned, the goverment would be in uproar if a human being was keept in such conditions

Birds were not breed to be in gages, they were not created with wings, in order not to be able to streach them, nor fly if applicable to the breed, how ever i rescued a parot a orange tip amozon, that had two of his toes missing, i rehomed him, he never had a gage, just a big perch, and was free to fly around the house as he wonted, the mess that came with it, I excepted, as I got so much pleasure form this Bird, although I would have much prefered it, if he was never breed for captivity in the first place, its amazing the people that think parots, are easy to look after, in deed they need alot of looking after, and the mess, theres no traing for, to all bird breeders please please stop breeding these wonderful birds, lets protect the rain forest, were they belong.

I think that the cages that the birds are kept in should be scraped now. They ar not efficiant and it's like keeping us in a cardboard box on the street!!!
