I'd like to congratulate the RSPCA for taking the 10 GSDs outside and putting a bolt gun to their heads rather than rehoming them!! What's that all about? Why have you moved so far from what you're supposed to be about and what your supporters believe you're about?

Animal stuffing killed unnaturally here is my comment:
I think this is just sad how humans trade animals lives for a decoration/model to make a a room nice and cuddly. However I don't mind so much if the animal died naturally but actually killing an animal for stuffing is just cruel.

    PETA NEEDS YOU!!
Come participate in a fun, one-of-a-kind demonstration on Saturday, 3 October, to urge Selfridges to stop selling foie gras
To create foie gras - French for "fatty
liver" - up to 2 kgs of a mixture of grain, maize and fat is pumped into
the stomachs of ducks and geese through a pipe two or three times a day for
three weeks. As the birds' livers become diseased and expand to up to 10 times
their normal size, the animals become sick, and many are unable to move. The
pipes sometimes puncture the birds' throats, which may cause them to bleed to
    death.
Foie gras production is banned in the UK and more
than a dozen other countries. More than 60 per cent of Britons believe that foie
gras sales should also be banned. Not one supermarket will sell foie gras in
the UK. Foie gras has also been pulled from the shelves of House of Fraser,
Prince Charles has banned it from Royal menus and the Pope has denounced it as
    cruel.
We'd like to make this demonstration as
large and noticeable as possible. Won't you please join?
The demonstration will take place outside Selfridges at 400 Oxford Street at 11 am and last for 30 minutes. However, we will meet in a location close to (but not in front of) Selfridges at 9:45 am sharp to talk through the event.
Our goal is to get 100 compassionate people out for this eye-catching demonstration. Each participant will be given a duck mask to represent the ducks and geese who are used to make the fois gras sold at Selfridges. Some people will also hold signs, while others will distribute leaflets.
It's important that you please RSVP writing to RoseG@peta.org.uk with "Birdie" in the subject line of your e-mail. The meeting location, dress code, lyrics of the chant, instructions on the dance and other fun details will be sent (to people who RSVP) closer to the date of the demonstration.

PETA may not have committed acts of terrorism themselves, but have funded other militant groups like ELF.
PETA are sensationalist. Instead of putting across a thoughtful message they stick naked women in every campaign and chant GO VEG GO VEG. They also aim a lot of their campaigns at young kids, which I find disagreeable. Sea Kittens? A very bloody Thanks-Giving "Cooking Mama" game? Leaflets with "Your Mommy Kills Animals" written on the front? It's all shock and no substance. If they have anything sensible to say, surely they wouldn't have to dress it up so much?
I'm not saying they're 100% wrong about the problem, it's their proposed solution I have a real problem with.
But we all have out own beliefs, and I simply don't agree with them and neither does the RSPCA.

OK, lets get things straight here. I volunteer for PETA UK and I know that they are a highly professional organisation who is working for legal political changes. Within the societies concerning animal welfare and putting a stop to the daily abuse and torture of animals.
They are not a militant organisation. Unfortunately there are some people whose frustration takes over when they know that animals are being tortured and abused. So they choose to take the lawbreaking approach instead, trying to help. BUT it backfires instead on legal organisations like PETA and WSPA and make them look bad.

PETA isn't a shock site, every video they have shown is a real video.
    Their there to educate.
Their methods may be extreme, but it is honesty the general public needs, and PETA is honest.
People dislike them because they feel uneasy with the videos they see, because it makes them realise what animal suffering their lifestyle contributes to,that's why they take offended and get their back up.
And you can bring up PETA euthanizing thousands of animals, but PETA had to do that because they had no homes for them.
They made the humane decision, would it be better they got abandoned and abused?.
    Ignorance hinders Progress, get Educated.
PETA are not a terrorist group they are the worlds largest animal rights foundation.
And PETA have never bombed, shot,or attacked anyone.
That is crazy dude, someone is lying to you bout PETA.
lol, terrorists, they just bring the cold hard truth.
And if it upsets you, maybe you need to look into why that is.

    Vegetarianism and veganism promoted.
No animal deserves to die just because it tastes good.
I do not understand how we so many in the western world, can expect to eat meat and it all be ''ethical''.
The meat and dairy industry is the most unethical, unsustainable, cruel industry on earth.
Plus according to a United Nations report the meat industry is the biggest cause of pollution in the world, emitting more CO2 then every plane, train, car, boat, and truck on this planet combined.
Eating meat is the one thing most people do.
I am not trying to brainwash or offend people, just educate, I was once a meat eater myself.
Featuring Environmentalism and educating people would also be useful in fighting animal cruelty.
There isn't enough space in the world for everything to be free range, so the only answer is to Go Vegetarian.
If you love animals don't eat them.
Also I think there should be more coverage of the horrors of sport hunting, and I would like to see all blood sports,in fact all sports involving animals banned.
Animals are living beings not athletes.
Fishing should also be included on this list.
Fish have virtually the same pain system as humans and feel pain and suffering, but I find they are often overlooked in animal rights issues, despite being an Animal.

I think that we should be highlighting all the abhorrent farming methods in this country with regards to all animals.

Also, the unworkable current hunting with dogs law to make all hunting illegal.

And further, the practice of greyhound and horse racing should be banned. All of which are despicable.

VeganXChick, I was well aware of the abuse animals go through before I heard of PETA. There is a LOT wrong with PETA; using terrorism to get their point across being the obvious one. But, I'm sure they mean well.
My main point is that the RSPCA is an animal 'Welfare' charity. They still educate people on animal cruelty and aim to stop it, is just that the definition of abuse is different. Someone, like yourself, who's obviously very passionate about animal rights, doesn't support their campaign so much as one like PETAs'. That is all.

'I think that there should be protests out in the open outside shops and stuff like that. So that people will stop buying stuff like fur coats'

This already happens at Harrods. This is the only department store in England which continues to sell fur! I would highly recommend boycotting this vile store. The same applies to Selfridges who sell fois gras.

ZDrache, there is nothing wrong with PETA. Just because certain individuals like to bury their heads in the sand as far as animal abuse is concerned, they certainly wake up when watching these videos. I personally do find the videos quite upsetting but if we the public were not made aware of the sickening abuse animals suffer at the hands of people we would be oblivious to the pain all these creatures suffer. After all animals can't speak up for themselves so its up to humans to do so for them.

Many people are oblivious to the misery endured by farm animals. There should be a section about the lives of poor creatures like the chicken, cow, lamb and pig, to name but a few. If people had a better understanding about how these wonderful animals get treated, then perhaps they would think twice about eating them.

A section about animal testing would also be useful. Many tests carried out on animals are completly unnecessary, intrusive and extremely cruel.

I would just like to point out that there is a huge epidemic in Britain at the moment with dog fighting. This is something I feel very strongly about and I would like to see a campaign by us and the RSPCA to organise a way of clamping down on this hard and fast. I am disgusted by the treatment of these beautiful animals. They are being violently abused by the people that breed and own them. I think it would be a good idea to work out a way of getting these animals steralised so that there is a better chance of the animals already needing care to get it rather than allowing more dogs to be brought into this situation. Also the particular breeds of dog that are used most for this apauling 'spectator's sport' are, in proper care, very loving and loyal dogs. Please get behind this cause and help make a difference.

Being a animal healer and involved in RSPCA Australia shelter volunteering for about 12 years, I am aware of the holistic developments in health care for animals. I will be studying Animal Homeopathy this year by correspondence with an Australian college. Once I am qualified, I would like to devote time to the animals at the RSPCA. And am thinking of traveling to England this year. Is the RSPCA thinking of employing holistic animal healers? And I mean holistic animal healers in their own right, without allopathic qualifications being necessary for employment? My training will be accredited by HATAA.

Blessed be, and I wish you every success at the RSPCA this Jera!

doglovershirley - animals do not cry like we do, very, very few species do cry (I think only us and some apes) (??)
In any case, yes animal cruelty is stupid, in fact any cruelty is stupid but then mankind is stupid. Some children are subjected to terrible mental and physical cruelty and then they can grow-up to be cruel in turn; some people are just born cruel even if they've always been treated well themselves. Look at what the Nazis did during the 2nd WW - how's that for cruelty? Where did that come from? Who first suggested doing such wicked things? How do you broach that with someone? "I'm going to do something unspeakably cruel to that person/animal - do you want to join me?"
I heard a woman being interviewed on radio and she had been subjected to sexual abuse all her childhood by her father and his group of paedophile friends (along with lots of other children) - her father was a vicar and a JP and an upstanding member of the local community - when she told someone she was branded as wicked and evil. She had an untreated sexually transmitted disease for years which has made her sterile and she had been subjected to at least 2 abortions that she didn't know about until she had to have a hysterectomy because she was too young to know what was going on at the time she was given them. When this and the baby P stuff goes on in the middle of our society and we do nothing to protect these babies and children how do you expect that anyone will care about how we treat animals?

I think it would also be a good idea if we had the information on which companies have good ethics. Like you have been doing with the Freedom food. That's been brilliant, only many of my local stores do not stock much of it. It would be brilliant to have something like the Freedom food, but for cosmetics and cleaning products etc. I know for instance that The Body Shop say they are against animal testing, but they have teamed up with LOreal who do use animal testing. Personally I'm not happy with this. The only other shop I know of is Lush, but unfortunately I can't afford to pay their prices all the time. Like a lot of people these days, I'm on a budget.

Also I'd love to hear more about things that I can physically do to help the RSPCA. I can't afford to donate money, however I am a RSPCA member and I always give things to my local RSPCA charity shop. I even volunteered at my local RSPCA Veterinary Clinic for a few months. But I'd like to know more about what I can do. Such as, if there is a local kennel maybe I could do dog walking once a week, or help feed the cats at the local cattery. I think if people where made aware of things like this, things that they will enjoy doing and do not have to give up all their time for, then there would probably be a lot more volunteers. I for one would love to know more about socialising animals.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing back, because if there is more I can do to help, then I would like to know about it.

Alika, the R.S.P.C.A. do operate campaigns overseas, but as always need extra funding to do so. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is another charity working overseas, also the World Society for the Protection of Animals, then there's the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. So although you probably feel that animals in Russia are getting a really bad deal (as they are, indeed) there are some organisations which try to help. The biggest problem in trying to stop animal cruelty is in trying to change the culture of the people concerned. This tends to mean a long haul in terms of educational projects to try to raise awareness of animal welfare issues. Some countries have such long-established practices that it is difficult to make people understand that animals are sentient beings, and suffer pain, stress and fear, etc, in just the same way humans do. Keep writing Alika, and keep campaigning, and raising both awareness, and money, for these hard-working animal welfare charities.

  • doglovershirley November 21, 2008 at 1:21 p.m.

    Okay.
I seriously think it's freaking stupid how animals are treated so cruelly. It's completely stupid.
We kick them outta their habitats. What they call home gets eradicated.
Some people kill them and watch them suffer pain. Cause it's 'fun'.
Some people don't care about what the animals feel.

Animal testing? Like wtf. If you want to test it on something, test it on something that is willing to be tested on. LEAVE THEM ALONE. THEY DON'T WANT TO BE MUTATED.

If people are going to eat animals, they should at least be allowed to eat, drink and run around freely - instead of kept in tiny cages. The shouldn't be fed loads of crap that makes them grow really big in a short period of time. They should be able to enjoy a happy life, not live one where they're never even seen sunlight. And in the end, if they are going to be killed, they should be killed without any SUFFERING. Cows, pigs, chickens, fish and even dogs and cats. ect. They don't deserve to die.

The use of fur in fashion designs and stuff is just utterly stupid - to me. I mean, seriously. The fur belongs to THEM - NOT US. No body ever said that we HAD to wear fur. It's not like we're gonna die if we don't wear fur either. Just cause it looks good doesn't mean we can go and tie an innocent animal upside down and skin them alive. What if you were in their position? You wouldn't want to bleed to death. The skinning of an animal - you don't even want to think about it. It's so freaking cruel. Animals aren't on earth for us to wear them. DON'T WEAR FUR. SERIOUSLY. >:(

Poaching needs to be stopped. Seriously. Going around breaking the law by being a murderer who sells it's victims bodies is completely stupid. For example, seal hunting, whale/dolphin hunting, killing tigers, rhinos, elephants, ect.

Gambling on animals is lame. The horses who race end up getting slaughtered. In painful ways. The dogs used in dog races end up having the same fate. Dog fighting is stupid. Forcing something to fight to the death is just. Stupidly stupid. It's a waste of money. And it's cruel to the animals. They're not meant to go around running as fast as they can.

Going and capturing an animal and training it to do stuff or putting it in a glass cage thingy is wrong. Animals aren't meant to go around juggling things. Nor should they be taken out of their natural habitat cause that's basically like making someone go live on mars with all the martians and stuff.

THEY SUFFER PAIN LIKE WE DO.
    THEY CRY LIKE WE DO.
    THEY'RE NOT STUPID.
THEY HAVE A LIFE AND THEY WANT TO LIVE IT TO THE FULLEST.
    THEY'RE JUST LIKE US.
And the worst bit is, WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE DOING TO THEM.

    Save the endangered species.
    DO NOT FREAKING WEAR FUR.
By products that are against animal testing, ect.

    Treat all animals humanely.
    Stop animals cruelty please.

  • miamelia November 21, 2008 at 9:15 a.m.

I believe that animals are innocent and that just because they have no voice and cannot speak English does not mean that they do not feel PAIN.

I mean like seriously, treat animals as human beings who cannot speak. Do we treat mute people badly and slaughter them for their meat/skin (fur)?

NO. WE DO NOT. THEN WHY IS THIS DIFFERENT FOR ANIMALS?

RSPCA, please stop the inhuman slaughter of animals, dogs, horses, cats... etc. BASICALLY, animals shouldn't be SLAUGHTERED and TORTURED just because people like to eat them -.-

That's kinda lame. But as for some people who eat pork, beef or chicken. I mean like...it's okay because they are not overdoing it. BUT making chickens super duper fat just because you want them to die faster and get more meat? That's kinda retarded and mean. Cows and pigs are like awesome too and I don't want them to purposely get killed just because people want to eat them....

Also, we need to prevent extinction of sharks, polar bears and other special animals. THIS WORLD IS CRAZY AT TIMES. There's pretty much 3 kinds of people, you know. People who love animals and try to prevent animal cruelty. People who want to prevent animal cruelty but aren't exactly doing anything/much. AND FINALLY, people who don't care about animals and shove themselves with shark's fin soup, dog's meat, horse's meat everyday. THIS IS REALLY UPSETTING TO HEAR ABOUT.

We hears news about people dying. What about the animals? Animals didn't exist for us to torment and torture. They existed to bring love and wonders to us. And what are we doing in return? Killing them? For their meat? For their fur? THIS IS RIDICULOUS.

RSPCA, please do as much as you can to stop animal cruelty of all types. PLEASE.

I can make movies, flyers, posters, newspaper reports on anything. You name it. My only urgent condition is that you have to promise to try your best in ending animal cruelty of all kinds, all over the world.

I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I would really like the RSPCA to bring attention to the horsemeat trade. I've seen pictures of how the horses travel many miles, to reach oversea's countries where horsemeat is a delicasy. The picture's were horrifying due to the discusting traveling conditions and because of this many horses die on the journey. It sickens me to think that anyone would want to eat horsemeat or any other "pets" such to speak, i love animals and have had horses in the past, It upsets me so much that nowdays this suffering is still going on, come on people it's time for animal suffering to END.

Another issue I would like to see tackled by the R.S.P.C.A. is the selling of exotic animals in pet shops, or come to that, the selling of any animals in pet shops. I really believe animals should not be sold over the counter. There are issues here, such as whether the animals are properly cared for when the shop is closed, whether any information about the animals' needs is provided at the point of sale, whether anyone knows if customers are just making an impulse buy, and whether they have the right conditions in which to keep the animals at home. Come on R.S.P.C.A. You are very strict about rehoming an animal in your care to a proper, caring environment, rightly so. Please extend this responsibility to animals bought in shops.

There are so many comments about animal cruelty in China in this list - I don't remember reading much about the subject in any of the R.S.P.C.A. 'Animal Life' magazines; what is this organisation doing about the problem? I would normally advocate a boycott of goods made in China, to hit them where it really hurts, but so much stuff is made in China nowadays, it's difficult to buy any consumer goods that have been made elsewhere! It would be really helpful if the R.S.P.C.A could publish a list of goods that are still made in the UK, or in Europe. Anyway, I wholeheartedley agree that something must be done to stop the tortuous treatment of animals by the Chinese. It is not on, in this day and age, and they cannot expect to be treated as a civilised nation while such barberous cruelty is allowed to continue.

I saw this video from the RSPCA about transporting these poor sheep all the way from Australia (they should be ashamed) and Britain too because the same goes on here. I wonder if any one of us as humans have any empathy left to give to others and just try to feel how it must be like to be one of those Lambs travelling, maybe talking to each other and trying to console each other not knowing where they where going, think if you were a sheep, or any other animal, treated brutely and not knowing why! What I love most of all, is to see the trust in an Animals eyes then I feel that I have been really blessed with something special, just try to put your shoes into some one elses and try to feel, the poor man, the one who walks passed you and the animals (who are silent)Try to read they feelings, it's not so hard if you care, I think that what life's all about. To be responsible for our actions and give as much love to all! Judy

What are our views on road kills? Isn't it in effect hit-and-run. It would be naive to think any convictions will be made for roadside accidents like such, but shouldn't drivers be able to stop if a kid ran in front of them?

What are your views? I just think life is so unfair and prejudiced. That a dogs life is valued differently to a hedgehog for example - let along human ones (and there's divisions within that even!)

sammyvanstaden - I'd love to hand out campaign material too. Seal Clubbing in my opinion currently has the least amount of public awareness.

It is totally barbaric in every sense of the word and no matter how much people don't want to hear about what happens to those seal pups I think more consciousness about this issue has to be created amongst our society if we have any hope of making a difference.

There are several animal protection societies working to raise awareness for Endangered Animals and how people can contribute to fund breeding projects, re-introduction schemes etc. But as far as I am aware (correct me if I am wrong) there are not many protection societies that put real focus on the issues of Seal Clubbing and Bull Fighting. If people here in the Uk have access to campaign material from websites such as this, e.g access to fliers and posters, then I would certainly volunteer to distribute, or even help to design some of the material and promote the causes near and around where I live.

I would love to give out flyers and stick posters locally. It would be really cool to make a protest, to show how serious we are. I recieved an e-mail about seal clubbing, and the pictures made me sick. I wanted to scream at those people.
It would be good to have a part of the site about wild animals (not forgetting reptiles!) so people can find more about the animals they like.
Lastly, we should sort out all these animal problems - seal clubbing, bull fighting, greyhound racing, over working work hores etc - even though it is easier said than done.

I'd love to give out flyers to houses in my area about stuff such as Endangered Animals, Fox Hunting, Bull Fighting, Mass Dolphin killng in China, Ivory Hunting and as utterly sickening as it is - Seal Clubbing. There could be a design contest and all members can take part - 7 winners: one for each of those subjects and then they are put together into one big booklet, you send them in bunches to us and we give them out. PS - SEAL CLUBBING IS SO NOT A SPORT IT IS DISGUSTING AND NOT NECESSARY!

I hope the people muttering on about cruelty do not eat animals . We all just have our one little life. enjoy yours but not at the expense of snuffing out someone elses .or keeping it in a prison cage. Boycott all the chemical/cosmetic companies that advertise on TV they are vivisectors and animal users especially Proctor and Gamble and Unilever . If you want to go on Demos don't expect the RSPCA to organise one .The RSPCA encourages animal eating . How weird is that!Join Animal rights groups Speak/AnimalAid/SHAC etc etc. Google veggies and find the Animal Rights calendar of events

It's about time we had some real action regarding docking of tails.
I work in a shelter, and it astounds me when we are still getting people bringing in dogs that have been docked. Badly docked too!!
When are these free advertising papers and websites going to be punished for allowing people to advertise docked puppies??? It is blatant!! They have pictures of litter after litter that are docked! This is a barbaric practise, and as no vet will dock unless on medical grounds, or if the breeder can prove they are working dogs, then it's obvious these breeders are doing it themselves.
It's disgusting, if members of the public could only see what happens when it's done wrong, it would stop the demand for docked puppies.

They are getting away with way too much. I have seen alot of proof and witnessed some of the awful things they do, now its time for someone to do something. I would like to see more publicity given to the dog and cat meat trade in China. This year, Bejing will host the Olympic Games so China is a country very much in the news. However, I do not believe that China deserves our support. Visitors to China should visit their zoos and witness the cruelty there. This is not just about poor conditions. In a Chinese Zoo you can buy a goat to throw alive into a tiger enclosure, and you can then enjoy the spectacle of the terrified animal being torn to shreds. This is entertainment in China. Visit the Guangzhou market and watch dogs sliding around in their own blood while they are being beaten to death in front of you and your children before being skinned alive. Yes, China will be in the news this year, but let it be in the news for all the right reasons, publicise their barbaric treatment of animals, encourage the public to boycott Chinese goods and definitely educate the public about the fur trade. People should be aware of the widespread mis-labelling of fur products so that you don't know that you are buying the remains of someone's pet dog or cat. Please publicise as graphically as you can these practices. The pictures shock and disturb, but if they make people at least think about what they are buying, you will have made a difference.

Nowadays fireworks go off for any occasion, ie. birth of a child, coming of age, etc. The old people must be reminded of the war. Animals are frightened to death. It people HAVE to test, i think they should test on humans that have said they can! Animals dont have voices and cant say no, they are just put in small cages in labs, just to later be tested on, how cruel can humans be? poor animals. :(
