Animals whether pigs or not should not be slaghtered for the welfare of humans. As far as i'm concerned they are just important as us. Its not the pigs fault that their is a disease linked to it. All we need to do is make sure the right measures are taken place to make sure we are not in danger by making contact wih a pig. If their is a danger then don't make contact with a pig until it is safe. Their will always be some medical crisis.

PETA NEEDS YOU!!
Come participate in a fun, one-of-a-kind demonstration on Saturday, 3 October, to urge Selfridges to stop selling foie gras
To create foie gras - French for "fatty
liver" - up to 2 kgs of a mixture of grain, maize and fat is pumped into
the stomachs of ducks and geese through a pipe two or three times a day for
three weeks. As the birds' livers become diseased and expand to up to 10 times
their normal size, the animals become sick, and many are unable to move. The
pipes sometimes puncture the birds' throats, which may cause them to bleed to
death.
Foie gras production is banned in the UK and more
than a dozen other countries. More than 60 per cent of Britons believe that foie
gras sales should also be banned. Not one supermarket will sell foie gras in
the UK. Foie gras has also been pulled from the shelves of House of Fraser,
Prince Charles has banned it from Royal menus and the Pope has denounced it as
cruel.
We'd like to make this demonstration as
large and noticeable as possible. Won't you please join?
The demonstration will take place outside Selfridges at 400 Oxford Street at 11 am and last for 30 minutes. However, we will meet in a location close to (but not in front of) Selfridges at 9:45 am sharp to talk through the event.
Our goal is to get 100 compassionate people out for this eye-catching demonstration. Each participant will be given a duck mask to represent the ducks and geese who are used to make the fois gras sold at Selfridges. Some people will also hold signs, while others will distribute leaflets.
It's important that you please RSVP writing to RoseG@peta.org.uk with "Birdie" in the subject line of your e-mail. The meeting location, dress code, lyrics of the chant, instructions on the dance and other fun details will be sent (to people who RSVP) closer to the date of the demonstration.

This is totally unneccesary and disgusting treatment of animals, there are humane ways to to kill the pigs no need to treat any living creature in this manner.
does anyone know did they actually burry the pigs alive?
i just can't beleive how people can be so cruel, so without compassion.

I just can't belive it... How can those people go home at night and have a good sleep? How can they bare to do it???????? I am horrified!! I don't eat pig and all animals have a right to live. Just because there is Swine Flu, doesnt mean the pigs should die! The poor innocent things can't help it. I didn't watch the video, i couldn't bring myself to do it, i just looked at the comments. One person wrote that the thought it was funny! That person must be out of their minds. I'm only 11. Children like me can't live in peace with all this cruelty going on. Its just so unfair.

I know this thread came about in the aftermath of the Egyptian pig cull, which I condemn out of hand. But Egypt is not the only country getting away with murder - literally. Visit www.animalsasia.org and read about the dog cull currently taking place in Hanzhong. This city has decided it wants to rid itself of ALL dogs because of a percieved threat of rabies. Rabies is indeed a problem in China, but they seem resistant to vaccines because there, dogs are food to many. Animals Asia is working tirelessly to improve the lot of dogs in China and they need your support. They are trying to persuade the Chinese government that the only effective weapon in the fight against rabies is not sticks and poles, but vaccines, and that dogs are friends and not food. They desperately need the support of all people who love dogs. I have just donated some money to Animals Asia to help them buy vaccines which they are stockpiling in readiness for a vaccination programme which they are hoping to persuade the Chinese government to implement. They must think they have a hope of success, otherwise, why get the vaccines in? If dogs were vaccinated, the Chinese might think twice about eating them. Please read what Animals Asia say and support them in any way you can. The Chinese only get away with this because they go unchallenged. With the eyes of the West on them, they are under increasing pressure to use other methods of rabies control. You can be a small part of that great tide of public opinion which might force them to rethink, and if you can afford a small donation to help with the cost of vaccines, a lot of dogs in China will be spared this sort of atrocity in the future. Please don't look the other way, these dogs need you.

If it's too appalling to show on here I don't even want to know. From the little I just read I'm feeling sick and angry already. I mean, THOUSANDS???!!!!!!! How can people do this???? When you think that we are very, very close to pigs and they are the 4th most intelligent animals in the world? I just do not, do not understand how some people can be so sick, and have it as their job in real life!!!!!! It seems so gross as to be impossible!!!!!!!
Did anyone actually watch it?

I think its disgusting that these people are able to & actually WANT to kill those poor pigs! I agree with everyone about how this has all been blown out of proportion, I'm sure there is another way to protect ourselves against things like Swine Flu, but I think they are too lazy to find another means of help, its easier for them to just kill off the animals in question. It needs to be stopped but not everybody has the access to this site or the internet etc so I think the idea from 'skolliebenji' is a great idea. Spread the word about cruelty to animals & hopefully there will come a time when we are all thinking on the same level & put a stop to it!

Good grief!!! Why do we have to be so cruel as a species? If we feel the need to mass slaughter, why not do it without such blatant cruelty? dreadful, dreadful, dreadful. I hope that everyone removes Egypt from their places to visit one day!!

i feel the same way skolliebenji and anna1234!
I am discusted of calling myself a human! No affence to people who love themselfs but this is not cereal! You can't gobble it right up and be done with it, we have to take action, But how? I am only ten! If you have an idea please tell me. I am despirate to email every single person that i know ...
So please tell your parents or grandparents or anyone even if your at school. Maybe tell your teachers to learn about animals for the day? Then the kids will tell there cousins then they will tell there teacher then it keeps going on until the whole country helps. The pig cull will stop, after that you will see all these smiling faces of piglets and pigs everywhere and you will be the saving animal queen or king! But the swine flu isn't that bad because the government procisly argued that it will stop and won't be that bad

I watched this news clip of the pigs being thrown literally out of this van and i wanted to cry. The Egyptians were so cruel to the pigs over swine flu and it was very disturbing! I wish I could help! Why do they have to do it? Us human beings havve just assumed ourselves as the superior mammal and don't care for animals wellfare or feelings! We over exagerate and I think most of the time we put innocent animals through unncessary pain! I agree with all of the comments above!

i agree with skolliebenji and hannah in that it is upsetting and frustrating that there are thousands of other people out there who would be disgusted at the blogs informing us about animal cruelty on this site.
that's why i think it's important that we tell as many people as possible about this website. use the banners, sticker etc to post on profile pages like facebook, myspace, etc.
i've told quite a few people about it and have forwarded the site to them in attempt to raise further awareness.
i've also written to the Egyptian Ambassador about the pig slaughterings, and i feel i'm doing all i can to help out. i imagine everyone else as a member of this site are doing all they can, too. i hope so :|

skolliebenji - yes I agree that information on welfare - of farm animals in particular - should be more wide spread and available to the average person on the street.

I often feel disgusted calling myself a human being, the supposed superior mammal on this planet, when I read the disgusting way some humans treat animals in all respects. Unfortunately I also believe it is due to lack of education about animals and this can come from our forefathers who knew less then than we do today about the good of animals and so this goodness has not been passed on to other generations. We need a bigger voice out there to educate the people. I have only recently joined up as a member and I find it sad that I have only come across all the wonderful things available on the RSPCA website since joining up, this information needs to be more widely posted to the person in the street who doesnt have time to surf the net, in order to get our voice across. Do others agree.

Swine flu has yet not killed any one or spread as much as i thought it would. Egypt are over reacting and wasting their own time and money and innocent pigs which is cruel. In Egypt there has yet not been any cases of swine flu in Egypt so i dont understand why they need to do this!

I am left livid and outraged after reading about the absolute barbaric actions carried out in Egypt. I completely agree with Sue, in that we do have a strong tendancy to over exaggerate about a new outbreak of disease, and the media doesn't help matters at all. However, with this aside, their actions are completely unacceptable and I am, without a doubt, compelled to write to the Egyptian Ambassador to be one more person putting forth their argument against their behaviour. I sympathise with their concern on the outbreak, but their way of dealing with them should not be allowed to be gotten away with. I really hope that everyone who shares the same opinion will do the same and write to these people.

This thread is prompted by the decision of Egypt to slaughter all its pigs. We did the same with a fair proportion of our cows once remember? Unless I am mistaken, Egypt is a predominantly muslim country where pigs are already considered unclean, so they don't really need much encouragement to kill them do they? And from other websites which deal with the plight of stray dogs in Egypt, you don't get the impression that animal welfare is top of their list of priorities - so no surprises there! I think we (meaning humankind in general)often overreact when these diseases are first announced. It is a sort of shoot first and ask questions later mentality. I am convinced that in many of these cases there is absolutely no need for a mass cull. There certainly isn't a need for it in Egypt now, but try convincing them? Wonder what they will do with an outbreak of Asian Flu! (apologies to any Asians reading this, it isn't personal, just trying to make a point). When we had the cattle cull, there was a lot of cruelty which went on, some of it inadvertent and some of it deliberate, because there are always some twisted individuals who enjoy seeing something suffer. Muslims generally kill by slitting an animals throat. If I buy meat (which is rare), I refuse to buy Halal meat for that reason, but to Muslims, it is the accepted method of slaughter, and I believe it has some sort of religious significance. I will not watch the You tube footage because I will just get so angry and there is so little I can do. I absolutely condemn the needless culling of any animals unless there is no viable alternative, and I do not think it can ever be done without compromising animal welfare because it is always done in a panic, when animal welfare considerations take a back seat. I do not consider there can be any such thing as a humane mass cull.
