I remember being on a farm and this pig acknowledged me standing by him, he was snorting, eating and just enjoying himself. I loved watching this pig so much, I found him absolutely adorable. When I see and hear stories about pigs being mistreated, i always think of that pig and how intelligent he was. It really does break my heart to know that they are kept in uncomfortable cramped and unhygienic conditions. They are so innocent and deserve to be treated in a humane way.

I never knew that pigs could be reared in such poor environments. I have told my mum to only buy meat with the 'freedom food' logo on it! I don't think killing pigs for meat is acceptable anyway, why kill animals when you can survive without? After watching that video, I have decided to become a vegetarian.

When are people going to ban all of this discusting behaviour????????

Do humans want to be known as cruel creatures????????

im a vgeatarian and i am strongly against killing animals for meat . i suppose if you are dying it is an acception but arent animals and humans equal so who should die, the animal or the human? i belive that if people just kill animals for fun it is unnacatple. if people eat animals i dont really understand why if they all have other foods to eat. i mean this is the modern day here and we can make substitutes for meat for your protein. people say "its dead so just eat it!" i dont think this is right either cause if you were dead would you like someone eating you? suppose not.

its ridiculous for any animal to live in such disgusting conditions and i dont understand why humans do it ? i dont know anyone who could force anything to live in those squalor conditions and pigs deserve just as much care as your beloved dog, just because they might not enjoy a cuddle on the sofa or fetching balls dosent meen they dont feel love and need care. Also if you are a vegtarian i really envy you :) sometimes i hate eating meat because i feel like im eating a friend but when i do eat meat i always check that its freedom food and free range because the least i can do is make sure it was a happy and free animal.

if people must eat animals the very least they can do is to only buy free-range. i don't eat animals but my dog does and wherever possible i buy him freedom food. pigs are beautiful, intelligent animals and deserve a whole lot more compassion than they get.

Well, I don't think that pigs are always living in the best conditions. If they are going to have to be killed for meat they should at least be able to enjoy the life they do get. Animals should be treated with as much respect as humans during there life.

I totally disagree with 'ponyluver' I think that is the worst part off it that pigs live for a few years unknowingly what its like to be free! I think the RSPCA should find these battary farms and free the pigs into a park with cows and sheep where none of them are allowed to be slaughtered!

I am a vegetarian, NO not a vegan! a vegetarian!
I am thoughly against killing animals for eating, we were made omivores so why don't we use it to our advantage and eat vegetables?
If we arrest people for abusing and killing animals everyday then why not arrest butchers? Cancel the open season in amarica and destroy all guns! Animals have a right to live! SPREAD THE WORD!

I completely agree that all pigs have the RIGHT to a natural environment, the right to be comfortable, entertained in an enriched environment etc, which is exactly how I keep my pedigree pigs.
What people forget is that if we all stopped eating pork then pig breeds would die out and would not be around any more. I too was a vegetarian for many many years and will eat only my own pork or friends ethically produced pork. What I find is that uneducated people will not pay the increased costs for this outdoor reared from birth to slaughter, not just for a few weeks then live in a smelly boring barn.
Support our rare breed farmers to keep these endangered pig breeds going by sourcing your pork from the pigs that are not suitable for breeding. I am proud of the lives our pigs have. Our only worry is no CCTV in the slaughter houses so I will be off to that campaign shortly....

I totally agree! Animals have rights too! Just because they can't voice those rights, doesn't mean they don't deserve them.

I think this is appauling! Pigs are such clever animals and should not be kept in such awful conditions. The way they are kept does keep alot of energy in them for the meat but at the same time what would you like to see... A happy animal who lives out their life how they should? OR A unhappy animal who is kept in unhealthy conditions?

All animals have rights! They should not be forgotten. I think that some people have ignored these animals rights for long enough!
Animals should not be kept in these conditions. EVER !

We all love animals, all of us! Even if its a hamster or a tiger.
Would you like to see them in these sorts of conditions cramped and scared? No you wouldnt. So think about the people who love pigs, they hate it as much as you do!

Hi HollyDog, thanks for your post.

We just wanted to respond on a couple of points to correct some facts to help reassure you.

Freedom Food is the RSPCA’s farm assurance and food labeling scheme. A Freedom Food approved pig farm could be indoor, outdoor bred, outdoor reared, free range or organic – as long as the RSPCA welfare standards are met. For a pork product to bear the Freedom Food label is must have come from an animal that has been covered by the RSPCA welfare standards throughout its entire life – not just its time on the farm. So not only are Freedom Food approved farms inspected against the RSPCA welfare standards, but the way that the animals are handled, transported and slaughtered must also conform to the RSPCA’s welfare standards too.

With regard to sow stalls – they are illegal in the UK, so no British pork will have come from a pig whose mother (sow) was kept in a sow stall. New Freedom Food members are not allowed to use farrowing crates. They are to be banned for existing Freedom Food members from 2013. This is as a result of scientific research and practical experience that has now shown that it is possible to give the sow more freedom whilst not compromising the welfare of the piglets. During the phasing out period, existing members may use them only for a maximum of 5 days after birth.

We really hope this has cleared up those points for you and helps to regain your trust in the RSPCA and Freedom Food. If you would like more information about any of this, have a look at our website http://www.rspca.org.uk/allaboutanimals/farm/pigs and the Freedom Food pages www.freedomfood.org.uk

Choose outdoor reared pork or organic pork. I would like to pick freedom food pork as well, but I have just watched something else and could not tell the difference between that and the normal intensive reared ones, and it only applies to the farm fattening the pigs not where they get the piglets from they can be in sow crates. Sorry RSPCA it takes years to develope trust and seconds to destroy it.

i agree. it's really important that people who are shopping only buy meat with the stamp of approval because then maybe the farmers will catch on and rear pigs differently...

Pigs should not have to suffer a life in prison. Which is basically what it is, its crule to keep such an intellegent animal in such a small non stimulating enviroment. No body should buy meat thats not got the stamp of aproval.

i think that pigs should have nice places to live and the farmers should play with them and be kind to them just like any other pet... why should pigs be different???????
people think they are smelly and horrible. well they are NOT they are highly and intelligent and playful animals that have as many rights as we do!

I agree completely with animalrspca, Beckiizii, and Danibear apart from 1 BIG thing. PIGS DO NOT LIVE IN FEAR OF BEING KILLED!!!!!!!! THEY DON'T KNOW!! I think that as long as pigs live a long and happy life NOT KNOWING that they are going to be killed, then when they are older be killed for meat then it's COMPLETELY FINE! As long as they are killed when they are old and ready to die.

The thing that I don't agree on is when pigs are kept in horrible conditions... As long as they are happy... its fine!!!

    I personally don't eat pork!

No I don't think this is right I agree with Beckilzil no animal farm or pets should wait their whole lives to find out if they will be killed and eaten today or the next. PLEASE SAVE THE PIGS FARM ANIMALS AND PETS!.

No it is unacceptable that any animal should have to live in squalor or in fear of being killed to be eaten by humans. I do not eat pork and I am glad because if an animla lives in torment all it's life then is killed to be eaten it's just wrong! All animals need to have love and care, nutrition and be respected, just as animalsrspca expressed. SAVE THE PIGS!!!!
